NIKOLAI IVANOVICH VAVILOV'S KHOREZM EXPEDITION: HISTORY AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY OF PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES

This article examines the history, objectives, methodological foundations, and scientific outcomes of the expedition conducted by Soviet botanist and geneticist Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov in the Khorezm region in the early twentieth century, within the framework of the IMRAD structure. The study analyses the role of Vavilov’s journeys to Central Asia, and Khorezm in particular, in shaping the theory of the centres of origin of cultivated plants. The botanical material collected during the expedition, the statistical distribution of local varieties, the dynamics of variety conservation, and the scientific significance of the Khorezm oasis in the global agrobiocoenosis network are reviewed using Uzbek, Russian, and foreign sources. The results demonstrate that the Khorezm expedition enriched not only regional floristics but also the global science of plant genetics and retains its theoretical and applied relevance to this day.
