Abstract

This article analyzes controversial issues of the ethnopolitical history of the Khiva Khanate in the 16th–19th centuries from the point of view of an ethnological approach. Since the political structure of the khanate was closely connected with tribal relations, the irrigated oasis economy, and regional trade routes, it is not enough to explain ethnic processes solely through dynastic exchanges. Ethnological research, that is, the study of genealogical traditions, clan memory, toponymy, lifestyle, economic relations between nomadic and sedentary groups, and the mechanisms of marriage and alliances, helps to reveal the inner logic of political events in more depth.
